American Remakes

Sloppy Joes

First of my recipes to share can be none other than this one for Sloppy Joes.  Since moving to Italy, I’ve introduced many of my friends here to this yummy wintry sandwich and they love it!  No Manwich here, so this is the real deal.  Yum!

Ingredients

  • 1 pound (about 400g) lean ground beef
  • 1/4 cup chopped onion or 1 chopped scallion
  • 1/4 cup chopped red bell pepper
  • 1 or 2 garlic cloves (whole, lightly smashed)
  • 1 teaspoon prepared yellow mustard
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 3 teaspoons brown sugar
  • salt to taste
  • ground black pepper to taste

Directions

  1. In a medium skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef, onion, garlic and green pepper; drain off liquids.
  2. Stir in the mustard, ketchup, and brown sugar; mix thoroughly. Reduce heat, and simmer for 30 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
We eat ours in hot dog style bread which keeps “Joe” a little less sloppy.  ;) Great served with home made french fries or potato skins.
